Initial Arrival at Tocumen:
You will notice there are not a lot of signs to get to baggage claim once off the aircraft. you are more or less let loose in the terminal. Good luck. Once through customs your DRIVER (Chachito or Elia) Will be waiting outside in a white van with a COPA sign in the front window. Go to the north exit to find him he will not be inside.
On your arrival day you will most likely go straight to the Hotel Riu and be dropped of. Beautiful hotel and upscale rooms. Copa Covers dinner and breakfast (Make sure you notify the hostess that you are with Copa) Your schedule will vary and sometimes be changed last mintute, be prepared for long days without lunch. Trust me pack some snacks you will need them.
Day 1:
My first day began with the flight simulator eval. Which you will either fly a piper seneca sim or a king air 200. I flew the King Air. It only has a simple EFIS with CDI and nav 2 will be an RMI. No autopilot.. Prepare yourself well for the sim. They give you very little time to get organized in the simulator. Before you get in the sim make sure you have knee board or note pad and pen. He will hand you the approach plates speak briefly about the systems and thats it. No more than a 2 minute briefing. (Do some home work and know climb CRUISE AND Vref speeds) Give your regular weather, procedure and take off briefings.
Routing --> Guatemala International (MGGT) PALEN Departure, LAGOX transition. (FIND APPROACH PLATES ON GOOGLE FOR MGGT) ILS/DME approach. Others candidates flew the CANAL2 departure to LAGOX - then the DME Arc to the VOR approach. Followed by the straigh in ILS
After making my turn on the 096 radial toward Lagox and calling established he advised me to proceed direct to the AUR VOR and expect the ILS-DME 1-Runway 01. (I briefed it immediately) And advised me to do the hold as published (*non standard) at the vor. Be careful as he is intentionally saying or doing things to catch you. As an example he did not provide an EFC (EAT) time for the hold so I requested one. He also changed my altimeter setting and did not advise any further altimeter settings. He will put the sim on autopilot while you brief your hold and approach. I used a parallel entry and timed legs... there will be no wind. Cleared for the approach called for descent checks (SLOW DOWN as much as possible to make this an easier approach. Make the turn inbound no further than 5 dme so you dont go beyond 7dme. Called loc and glide slope alive then was up and down on the glide path. **** If unstable immediately go missed and advise intentions. He will ask you about the hold after the missed which is a parallel entry as well. Then you will be reset on final for the ILS to land. Keep you hand steady and avoid touching the power at all and use extremely light adjustments on pitch.
From there we went to the lab. They took blood/urine for drug testing. Then to Copa headquarters where you will meet your recruiter and do either to Compass or CPP test. Which I did the CPP test. Its 200 questions about yourself. Be positive. After the ridiculously long day we returned back to the Hotel.
Day 2:
Second day began with the nerve racking polygraph. He cracks some jokes to make you feel better but trust me everyone got nervous my heart was pounding with sweaty palms. He asks a couple control questions like; is the the month of May? etc. He will ask about money laundering, drug trafficking, lying to officials... then repeats the questions again. Just stare at the wall and think about something else. From there we went directly to head quarters for the Compass Test and the interview. Compass test was fairly simple. Brush up on your basic math skills and know your ATP questions. Chase the ILS around with the joystick and rudder pedals, control speed with the arrows on the key board. There will be a memory test as well with frequencies headings and altitudes. It is very mentally draining!!
The interview was no more than 5 minutes. Do your research on the company and make sure you make them know that you would LOVE to work and live in Panama. Be pleasant at all times and make sure you say that you dont care which aircraft you get put on. (You will most likely be put on the 737 regardless they need pilots!)
We then went directly to the airport for departure.
You will have to return for the phsyc eval with the AAC. or some will do it when here in Panama during the screening.
Be persistent and do not stop sending emails they never get back to you; so just keep sending one every other day as I did. They are horrible for returning your messages. Always emphasize in every email how hard you will work to make this happen no matter what! I was a flight instructor flying 172s/Piper senecas and was accepted for the 737NG. There will be a 9 month long bridge training course for those who do not have Jet time. Copa has very thorough training and is a great company to work for. They pay for your apartment and transportation. All you have to do is buy food cook and study. Your flight benefits become active immediately and your significant other can come and vistit at the aparment as often as you like!! (As long as your room mate approves
Cheers and good luck!
