Armée de l'AirFRANCE’S ÉTAT-MAJOR des Armées (French Defence Staff) announced on September 5 that four Armée de l’Air (French Air Force) Mirage 2000Cs stationed in Djibouti have now been replaced by a similar number of Mirage 2000-5Fs. The four replacement aircraft landed at Base Aérienne 188 ‘Colonel Emile Massart’ at Ambouli International Airport/Camp Lemonnier on the afternoon of August 31 after flying in from BA125 Istres/Le Tubé, where they had picked up their tanker support, in the form of a C-135FR from Groupe de Ravitaillement en Vol 93 ‘Bretagne’. Previously, the detachment in Djibouti had comprised a mix of four Mirage 2000Cs and three Mirage 2000Ds from Escadron de Chasse 3/11 ‘Corse’ but only the 2000Ds will now remain, while the 2000Cs will return to France. The Defence Ministry noted that the arrival of the upgraded 2000-5Fs in Djibouti, equipped with the RDY multi-mode radar, reflects France’s commitment to the defence agreements between the two countries. The deployment therefore now comprises four Mirage 2000-5Fs and three Mirage 2000Ds to provide the optimum defence for the airspace of Djibouti.
