GEnx engine completes first round of flight tests (Washington DC)

Fri, 08 Jun 07 17:15:27 GMT

General Electric has completed the first round of flight tests on the GEnx engine designed to power the Boeing 787 and 747-8.

The GEnx completed 34 flights and 187 flight hours aboard GE's Boeing 747 test-bed, verifying the engine's design and electrical requirements for the 787, the company says.

Flight tests showed the engine could keep operating while producing the 787's maximum power requirements and confirmed its ability to restart in flight at "various conditions within the 787 flight envelope".

GE has also completed emissions certification testing, showing levels of nitrogen oxides, hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide emissions "significantly lower than present and future regulations".

A second round of flight tests is expected to occur later in the year. GE has sold around 870 GEnx engines to 30 customers to date.

Aeroflot de Rusia firma 22 Boeing 787's

Russia's Aeroflot signs for 22 Boeing 787s (London)

Sat, 09 Jun 07 13:51:14 GMT

Russian flag-carrier Aeroflot has, as anticipated, signed a contract to acquire 22 Boeing 787 twin-jets, with the delivery dates set for 2014-16.

The airline has not indicated an engine selection, stating that it will make its choice at a later date.

Under the terms of the contract, says the carrier, it has the option of taking either the 787-8 or larger 787-9. It has not detailed any initial split between the two models.

Boeing and Aeroflot signed the agreement at a ceremony in St Petersburg in the presence of Russian first deputy prime minister Sergei Ivanov.

The pact is the latest in a long-running and politically-charged saga centred on the renewal of Aeroflot's long-haul fleet. Boeing had previously assigned 787 production slots to Aeroflot but these lapsed as a final deal remained elusive.

Boeing has also notably signed agreements today, alongside the 787 deal, regarding co-operation with Russia's United Aircraft Corporation and with Sukhoi.

Aeroflot has already tentatively agreed to take 22 Airbus A350s, to be delivered from 2014-17, as well as ten Airbus A330s from 2008-10. This deal, the subject of a memorandum of understanding in March, has yet to be firmed and it is unclear whether the airline will retain both the 787 and A350.

The carrier's fleet overhaul has also involved its deciding to take 45 Sukhoi Superjet 100s and six Ilyushin Il-96-400 freighters.

Russia's S7 Airlines recently became the first carrier in the country to opt for the 787 with a deal to take up to 25 of the type.

Argentina moves for radar to settle ATC difficulites (Madrid)

Mon, 11 Jun 07 09:07:32 GMT

Argentina's defence ministry has moved to settle ATC difficulties at Buenos Aires' Ezeiza International Airport by striking a deal with Spanish air force to borrow a Lanza 3D mobile radar system until December 2008.

The defence ministry says the deal provides a short-term solution to the current ATC problems experienced at Ezeiza.

Pilots and airlines have repeatedly complained about the "unsustainable state" of the Argentinean ATC system, particularly at the approach paths to Ezeiza and Buenos Aires downtown airport Aeroparque. Unions claim there have been "several" documented cases of "serious losses" of minimum separation resulting from inadequate radar coverage, and have urged pilots to exercise extreme vigilance of the present air traffic control situation in order to maintain safe operations.

Last month, a high profile near miss on the runway at Ezeiza between a LAN Airbus A340 and a Mexicana Airbus A320 prompted the Argentinean defence minister to announce a commitment to improve airport and ATC safety in the country.

Mexico's Aerolitoral to rebrand as Aeromexico Connect (Madrid)

Tue, 12 Jun 07 11:35:18 GMT

Aeromexico's Monterrey-based regional subsidiary Aerolitoral is to rebrand under the Aeromexico Connect name in the last quarter of this year in an attempt to reinforce the brand of its corporate parent.

An Aerolitoral spokesman says: "We planned to implement the change in May, but in the end the process was more complex than expected, so we decided to delay it for six months."

While the move will not imply any changes in the way Aerolitoral operates regional flights for Aeromexico, he says: "it obviously implies a tighter commercial integration between both companies, once they operate under the same brand". The move is also aimed at strengthening Aeromexico's value in its ongoing privatisation process.

Aerolitoral operates a fleet of 26 Embraer ERJ-145 jets and 11 Saab 340B turboprops to 35 destinations all over Mexico as well as Los Angeles, Tucson and San Antonio in the Southern USA. The airline holds options for 25 more ERJ-145 aircraft.

The Rolls-Royce Trent XWB remains the only engine on offer for the Airbus A350. And Airbus Chief Operating Officer - Customers John Leahy rules out an early resolution to the long-running talks with GE about the development of a rival powerplant, saying that "nothing is imminent." He adds that a deal may not even be reached this year. GE confirms that it has offered variants of the Boeing 787's GEnx for the A350-800/900, but has not had a response from Airbus. Leahy says Airbus is not interested in the GEnx and is seeking a new, more powerful engine that is "a generation beyond."

ILFC tipped to unveil 50-strong 787 order

Wed, 13 Jun 07 11:45:37 GMT

US lessor International Lease Finance (ILFC) is being tipped to announce an order for around 50 Boeing 787s during the forthcoming Paris air show

The Seattle Times is reporting ILFC will work over the next couple of days on finalising the deal with a view to announcing the follow-on order on 19 June.

ILFC has already ordered 22 Boeing 787s together with additional options and purchase right, selecting both General Electric GEnx and Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines to power the aircraft

International Lease Finance Corp. -- the world's biggest airplane leasing business -- is expected to place an order for as many as 50 Boeing 787s at next week's Paris Air Show, according to an industry source. The deal will ensure that ILFC owns more Dreamliners than any other customer. The company ordered 22 of the planes in November 2005. ILFC founder and CEO Stephen Udvar-Hazy has said in interviews he could see his company eventually owning 100 Dreamliners. The strategic importance of the Paris deal to Boeing is that ILFC will lease its 787s to many airlines around the world, widening the Dreamliner's already broad customer base. Capping the air show with the big, unexpected order would also extend the 787's strong momentum and nicely set up the rollout of the first Dreamliner in Everett next month.

PARIS 2007: R-R flies 787's Trent 1000 engine on 747 testbed (Paris)

Tue, 19 Jun 07 11:38:52 GMT

Rolls-Royce has flown its Trent 1000 turbofan - the lead powerplant for Boeing's 787 twinjet - for the first time, aboard the UK manufacturer's 747 testbed.

The first phase of the engine's flight test programme is being conducted from Waco, Texas.

"We gave the engine a hard time for its first flight, but it did everything we asked. It was very stable and predictable," says Rolls-Royce chief test pilot Phill O'Dell.

"Normally at this stage we would have expected to leave the engine at fixed thrust, but we gained confidence so quickly that we used it to manoeuvre the aircraft. We will now move quickly to aggressive operability testing."

Dominic Horwood, R-R director of Boeing programmes, adds: "We have only a few tests over the next few weeks to complete the certification validation programme."

The Trent 1000 underwent simulated high-altitude bench testing at the Arnold Engineering Development Centre in Tullahoma, Tennessee. This included icing compliance, engine operability and in-flight restarts across the flight envelope.

R-R's 747-200 flying test bed was converted by L-3 Communications at the company's Waco base. This included removing one of the original RB211-524C engines to accommodate the Trent 1000.

The modification also involved installing equipment to dissipate the half a megawatt of electricity produced by each Trent 1000 in flight. The 787 will use this energy to power the aircraft's control surfaces and cabin systems.

R-R recently delivered the first set of Trent 1000 engines to Boeing, which are being installed on the first 787 for its roll-out next month. The aircraft is due to have its first flight by the end of September.

Delta equipará 63 de sus aviones con winglets.

PARIS 2007: Delta to equip 63 Boeing aircraft with winglets (Paris)

Tue, 19 Jun 07 07:32:20 GMT

Delta Air Lines will install Aviation Partners Boeing winglets on 63 aircraft, including 15 Boeing 767-300ERs, 10 757-200s and 38 737s.

The agreement, announced this morning at the Paris Air Show, includes options to install winglets on all aircraft in the three fleets. It represents the first time that Delta has installed winglets on any of its aircraft.

"You'll likely see additional aircraft [installed with the winglets] as we go forward," Delta chief operating officer Jim Whitehurst told ATI yesterday.

Delta says the winglets will improve its operating and fuel efficiency, and give the carrier greater flexibility to serve more markets with existing aircraft.

"We expect to see a minimum of 3.5% improvements in our fuel consumption and a minimum of 5% in our range thanks to this added technology," says Whitehurst.

PARIS 2007

Boeing is about seven or eight years away from replacing the 737 with a new-technology narrowbody, according to Boeing Commercial Airplanes President & CEO Scott Carson. Speaking at this week's Paris Air Show, Carson said "the plane continues to produce excellent value," adding that Boeing is looking for a 15 percent improvement in operating efficiency versus the 10 percent attainable right now. He noted that the company is unconcerned if it is not first to market with a narrowbody replacement, stating: "I would not want to be first if I had to do it with today's technology." Boeing has sold about 300 Next-Generation 737s over the last two years. Sales of single-aisle planes represent about 41 percent of today's market.

PARIS 2007

The Airbus new plane order tally on the first day of the Paris Air Show brings it practically level with rival Boeing. Orders for 219 firm aircraft have raised Airbus' firm order total this year to 420 jets. Going into this week's Paris Air Show, Boeing had secured net orders for 429 aircraft. Airbus is now predicting it will win in excess of 600 firm orders for 2007. In other industry news, the Wall Street Journal is reporting that Delta Air Lines is likely to order as many as 125 Boeing 787 Dreamliners by the end of the year. If Delta's plan remains on track, the order would be Boeing's largest yet for the 787 from a U.S. carrier

United suffers massive computer failure (Washington DC)

Wed, 20 Jun 07 17:41:21 GMT

United Airlines had a massive two-hour-long computer system failure affecting its entire worldwide network this morning that will probably continue to cause flight delays throughout the airline's schedule today.

"We had a computer outage across the entire system this morning," says a United spokesman at the airline's Chicago hub. The failure began at 08:00 and lasting until 10:00, he says. As a result, no United aircraft could take off, he adds. At 10:00, the system was restarted and is "functioning normally now," he says.

United flights, according to some reports, experienced "several hour" delays as a result of the failure. Even though the computer system is operating again, United says it expects delays to continue to ripple through its system.

The company is currently investigating the cause of the failure and its possible effects on the scheduling system. "We're still assessing the situation," says the spokesman.

Aeromexico la primera en utilizar E-190 en México

PARIS 2007: Aeromexico becomes Mexican launch carrier for E-190

Wed, 20 Jun 07 17:17:17 GMT

Aeromexico has leased four Embraer 190s from GE Commercial Aviation Services (GECAS), becoming the first Mexican operator to acquire the type.

The GECAS order was already included in Embraer's backlog, says the Brazilian manufacturer in a statement released today at the Paris Air Show.

It says the aircraft will be configured with 99 seats in two-class configuration. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in the second part of this year.

"We are delighted to make this deal public, confirming Embraer's long-term strategy to become an important player in the Latin American market," says Embraer executive VP, airline market Mauro Kern. "The Embraer 190 aircraft will help Aeromexico's expansion in medium-density markets, given its size, excellent performance, passenger comfort and economics."

Aeromexico president and CEO Andres Conesa adds: "We are excited to be the launch customer for the E-Jets family in Mexico. The flexibility of the Embraer 190 will allow us to use the aircraft on both domestic and international routes, in airports at high altitudes and high temperatures, like the one in Mexico City."
